On February 4th, 2010, the Ambassador of Romania, Dr. Ion Jinga paid an official visit to the University of Warwick, at the invitation of the Romanian Students. The pro-vice chancellor of the University, senior management and members of the teaching staff of the University received His Excellency where he delivered a speech on the topic: "The Challenges of the EU enlargement - a view from one of the newest member states."
The University of Warwick is a British campus university located on the outskirts of Coventry, West Midlands; England. It was established in 1965 as part of a government initiative to expand access to higher education, and in 2000 Warwick Medical School was opened as part of an initiative to train more doctors in Britain. The University describes itself as a research led institution and in the last Research Assessment Exercise the University was the 7th highest-ranked research institution in the UK. Amongst its 16.000 students, there is a number of 46 Romanian students who in April 2009 established "The Romanian Speaking Society-Warwick." The University has 29 academic departments and over 50 research centres and institutes in four colleges: Fine Arts, Medicine, Science and Social Sciences.
In his lecture the Ambassador spoke about the challenges and advantages of the EU enlargement, from our country's point of view in front of a numerous audience.
During the meeting with the Romanian students, the Ambassador expressed the willingness of the Embassy, of the Romanian Ministry for Foreign Affairs and of the Department for Relations with the Romanians Abroad within the Government of Romania to support joint projects.
"We had, of course, 70.000 pages of acquis communitaire to transpose into the Romanian legislation. The accession to the EU, for Romania, was even more significant than a legally binding political act consecrating the result of many years of negotiations. Romania being recognized as one of the members of the European Family was a historical and spiritual moment," stated the Ambassador of Romania.
